Overview
Max Length restricts how much text customers can type into Short Text or Paragraph Text options. This ensures responses fit your requirements and prevents overly long entries.
Limit the number of characters customers can enter in text input fields.
To set max length:
- Navigate to Option Sets page and open your option set
- Click on a Short Text or Paragraph Text option
- Click on Advanced Settings below the option label
- Enter a number in the Max Length field (e.g., 50 for 50 characters)
- Click Save in the contextual bar
What happens:
- Customers can type up to the character limit
- Input field prevents typing beyond the limit
- Remaining character count may display (depending on your theme settings)
When to Use Max Length
Good use cases:
- Engraving text - Limit to physical space constraints (e.g., 20 characters)
- Gift messages - Control card size requirements (e.g., 100 characters)
- Short answers - Ensure concise responses (e.g., 50 characters for a name)
- Social media handles - Match platform limits (e.g., 15 characters for Twitter)
Examples:
- Name field: Max 30 characters
- Gift message: Max 150 characters
- Instagram handle: Max 30 characters
- Initials for monogram: Max 3 characters
Available For
Max Length is only available for these option types:
- Short Text - Single-line text input
- Paragraph Text - Multi-line text input
Other option types (dropdowns, checkboxes, etc.) don't have this setting.
Combine with Help Text
Add help text to inform customers of the character limit, e.g., "Maximum 20 characters for engraving".
