Easy Redirects - Use Case Guide

This guide clarifies which redirect scenarios are supported by Shopify, Shopify Markets, and the SC Easy Redirects app. The goal is to help merchants and CX teams quickly understand what is possible and what is not when creating redirects.

1. Redirect Subdomain to a Specific page on main domain

Example: blog.shopcircle.com → shopcircle.com/blog
Supported? No
Shopify does not allow redirecting an entire subdomain to a specific path or folder on the main domain.

2. Redirecting Shopify System Paths (e.g., /products or /collections)

Example: shopcircle.com/products → shopcircle.com/collections
Supported? No
Shopify blocks redirects using its core system paths.
You can redirect deeper URLs like /products/item1, but not the base paths /products or /collections. These paths are integral to Shopify’s store structure and cannot be redirected. This is the complete list of reserved words (paths) that cannot be redirected:

/products
/collections
/collections/all
/collections/vendors
/collections/types
/cart
/checkout
/orders
/apps
/services
/shop

3. Redirecting a Domain to a Subdomain with Path/ Subfolder

Example: shopcircle.es → shop.shopcircle/es
Supported? Yes, with SC Easy Redirects
Our app can create this redirect in two ways. One way is to use live redirects and another way is to create hardcoded redirects. In addition, Shopify automatically sends the subdomain to the primary domain homepage, regardless if we enter the “/” for the homepage or not.

4. Redirecting a Subdomain to a Page on a Different Domain (Cross-Domain)

Example: myshop.shopcircle.it/blog → shopcircle.eu/our-story
Supported? No
Shopify does not support redirecting from one domain or subdomain to a completely different domain. Our app cannot do this either.

5. Redirecting Subdomain to the Primary Domain (the Same Path)

Example: de.mystore.com/products/p1 → mystore.com/products/p1
Supported? Yes, Shopify native
Shopify automatically redirects subdomains to the primary domain if the path is the same.

6. Redirecting a Subfolder on One Domain to Another Domain

Example: .dk/en → .com
Supported? No
Shopify Markets does not support automatically redirecting language subfolders from one domain to another domain, nor does Shopify’s native navigation tool. Our app cannot make this cross-domain redirection either. Similar to Example #4

7. Redirecting from a Subfolder to the Primary domain

Example: shopcircle.com/en-cn/ → shopcircle.com/
Supported? Partially
Shopify requires you to create each redirect individually. This works for cases where you have a few links to redirect, and you can use Shopify’s navigation tool.
Wildcard or automatic redirection for all /en-cn/* pages are not supported, and therefore is not convenient for redirecting a large number of links.
